The plaintiff was a teacher who was removed from her position as an assistant superintendent by the school board. She alleged that she wrongfully was terminated based on a combination of race, age, and sex discrimination.
Econ One was retained by counsel for the defendants to analyze the plaintiff’s damages claim. Charles Mahla demonstrated that the plaintiff’s claimed damages were overstated through a careful analysis of a merger between the defendant school district and another school district, which showed that the plaintiff’s position was likely to disappear independent of any actions taken by the defendants. Dr. Mahla also demonstrated that the plaintiff’s alleged retirement losses were overstated due to a faulty application of the CalSTRS retirement formula by the plaintiff’s expert. When the case went to trial, the jury found for the defendant on liability, so the damages and Dr. Mahla’s testimony were not addressed.
