Rodriguez v. Department of Justice, State of California

The plaintiff was a special agent for the Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement in the California Department of Justice’s Division of Law Enforcement who was denied a promotion. He alleged that he had satisfied all the requirements for such promotion, and the denial was a result of race discrimination.

Econ One was retained by counsel for the plaintiff to provide an analysis of the economic loss suffered by the plaintiff. Charles Mahla’s analysis involved an estimate of the plaintiff’s lost future earnings during his work life, as well as a detailed analysis of his estimated retirement losses under the State’s CalPERS retirement plan. The plaintiff prevailed at trial and was awarded both work life and retirement losses as outlined in the analysis that Dr. Mahla described in his trial testimony.
