Dr. Hal Singer’s expert testimony has been cited as key evidence in support of certifying a class of MMA fighters in the well-known monopsony case against Zuffa, doing business as the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). The newly certified class alleges that Zuffa engaged in unfair anticompetitive behavior in the MMA market from 2010-2017. Dr. Singer’s work included a multivariate regression analysis of input foreclosure from exclusionary contracts that was used as evidence that Zuffa had unlawfully suppressed fighter wages. The court concluded in its class certification order that “Dr. Singer’s reports and testimony are reliable sources of proof as to antitrust impact”[1] and that “[t]he Court finds that Plaintiffs’ expert Dr. Singer has presented a sound and reliable model that satisfies Plaintiffs’ burden for class certification for the Bout Class.”
